Breaking out Pats capture 5th division in 6 years
The Patriots won another t-shirt and hat game Sunday, beating the Jaguars 24-21 to capture their 4th strait AFC East title and 5th in 6 years. The game was a bone cruncher that was dominated by the Pats defense, which allowed two mistakes to equil 14 points, but for the most part shut down Jacksonville. Tom Brady showed why he should have been picked for the Pro Bowl with 249 yards passing on 28 of 39 passing with no turnovers. Brady rushed for a personal best 31 yards on 10 carries, and was almost broken in half while diving for a first down in the 2nd half. The play knocked him out of the game, but he shook it off and returned two plays later. Lawrence Maroney made his return and broke a long touchdown run late that put the Pats ahead for good. `
With wins this weekend, the Broncos and Jets will take the 5-6 seeds. The Pats (11-4) currently have the 4th seed and are following the sinking Colts (11-4), who defeated New England earlier in the season. If the Pats win the final game in Tennessee (and they may end up resting some starters) and the Colts lose, they would take on the 6 seed and could head down a road to Baltimore, as opposed to making a stop in San Diego after hopefully taking out the 5 seed. As for now UB would love to get a chance to beat up on the Broncos and their rookie QB, but the matchup against Denver never turns out good, so it might be better to take on the J-E-T-S...Either way the Pats will look styling in their new shirts and hats, with the hopes of collecting more.

So, lets cut to the chase . . .
My New Years Resolution:
Turn off the *&^% and Fly!

As most of you know, I recently wrote an article for nycaviation.com entitled, Do Commercial Pilots Really Suck at Manual Flying? (http://www.nycaviation.com/2013/11/commercial-pilots-really-suck-manual-flying/#.Uqkg5pFItFw)
In it, I detailed a new FAA study which posits that the greatest risk in todays cockpit is 1.) Over-reliance on automation leading to complacency, and 2.) Lack of understanding of automation, leading to a reluctance to, well, Turn off the magic and fly.

While I take issue with the FAAs premise that its our greatest risk (see an upcoming NYCA post where I, Karlene Petitt and others write about pilot fatigue), I did generally agree with the above two points.

Todays airline pilots fly the safest airplanes in history. They are the best-trained pilots in the world, operating in an environment that has become six times safer than your own bathtub. But pilots are human, and therefore prone to human error.
ANATOMY OF AN AIRLINE FLIGHT

You board your plane,
take your seat,
strap in.

In a nutshell:
After the tug disconnects and the engines are started, the Captain taxies the plane out to the active runway. He steers with his hand tiller and stops with the toe brakes on his rudder pedals.
Cleared for Takeoff: The PF (Pilot Flyingeither Captain or First Officer) takes the controls, runs the thrust up, steers with the rudders. The PNF (Pilot Not Flying) calls, V1
Vr
The PF rotates (pulls the stick back), the plane lifts off and flies.
PNF: Positive Rate PF: Gear Up The PNF raises the gear handle and the landing gear sucks up into the gear wells.

At this point, 95% of the time for 95% of the pilots, the PF engages the Autopilot. (On the new RNAV departures, this is actually required for precision maneuvering.)

From here on out, except for special cases, the airplane is flown entirely on autopilot. While most modern aircraft can autoland (land on autopilot), most of the time the PF disconnects the autopilotusually somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 AGLand lands manually.
Make no mistake, at all times while the autopilot is engaged, the PF is flying. That is, s/he is telling the autopilot what to do.

For airliners, flying is nothing.
Managing the flight is everything.

Think of todays autopilot as a fancy, 3-D Cruise Control. You use your CC in the car to relieve you from the mundane burden of constantly adjusting the accelerator.

This frees his mind up to take in the Big Picturewatch for other traffic, monitor the radio frequency, monitor performance and deal with other issues.

This type of flyingmonitoring an autopilotmay not seem as romantic as Luke Skywalker keeping it on manual for a while, but believe you me, this is the safest way to travel.
As Ive said in the past, When it comes to airliners, flying is nothing. Managing the flight is everything.

Heres the problemand this is one of the main points the FAA is driving at:
all this managing and no flying makes Jack a dull pilot.
In Fifi (our affectionate name for the Airbus), this is doubly true.

Those who have taken basic flight training know that there are several controls you constantly have to manage:

the stick, or yoke, controlling up/down, right/left.
the rudder pedals, coordinating turns with the stick to keep the plane flying efficiently (also used for directional control on the ground, and for landing in crosswinds.)

British Hacker Breaches US Defences And Faces 20 years

According to scma magazine: A 28 year old man, described by US federal prosecutors as a "sophisticated and prolific computer hacker," was arrested in Suffolk and has been indicted for the alleged hack of US Army and other government-run databases, and now faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

On Monday, Lauri Love was charged for his suspected involvement in breaching thousands of computer systems in the United States and elsewhere between October 2012 and this month in order to steal sensitive government data and personally identifiable information (PII), a release from the New Jersey US Attorneys Office said.
Love, who was arrested by the National Crime Agency (NCA) on Friday at his Stradishall home, has been charged under the Computer Misuse Act (CMA), which allows individuals to be arrested for launching attacks from within the UK against computers anywhere in the world, so he could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of charges brought against him in New Jersey and Virginia. Andy Archibald, Head of the NCAs NCCU said: "This arrest is the culmination of close joint working by the NCA, Police Scotland and our international partners, adding that, no matter where in the world you commit cyber crime, even from remote places, you can and will be identified and held accountable for your actions.
Prior to his arrest, he was charged in a Newark federal court with one count of accessing a government computer without authorization and one count of conspiring to do so, an indictment unsealed on Monday revealed (PDF).
That same day, a complaint filed against Love in a federal court in Virginia was unsealed (PDF). In Virginia, Love was charged with conspiracy to access and damage the protected computer of multiple US government agencies.
According to the indictment unsealed in New Jersey, "the data stolen from the government victims include PII of military servicemen and servicewomen and current and former employees of the federal government," which resulted in millions of dollars in damages.
Over the past year, Love allegedly exploited vulnerabilities in Adobe ColdFusion and carried out SQL injection attacks to hack government databases with unnamed co-conspirators in Australia and Sweden. After gaining access to the targeted networks, the group allegedly planted malware on government systems, which allowed them to maintain backdoor access to the compromised networks, court documents said.
Using the ColdFusion and SQL injection attack methods, the group is accused of stealing data from a long list of US Army systems and other agencies and organisations, which include the U.S. Department of Defences Missile Defence Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
In a press release, the New Jersey US Attorneys Office published a short version of the alleged intrusions, listing the details in order of occurrence including the organisation affected, the type of attacks used and what kind of data was stolen as a result of the hacks.
In addition to PII stored on the affected databases, information such as defence programme budgeting data and other sensitive military information was believed to have been accessed.
Love has been released on bail until February 2014.
Security has long revolved around firewalls and other traditional defences, however, hackers have far surpassed the sophistication of these standard defences. Once successfully inside a corporate network, criminals are able to access and steal valuable and sensitive information, and as seen in this case, can plant back doors to enable access to these systems at a later date. Organisations need to take steps to proactively lock down their network, whilst also altering their mindset to the fact that its not a question of if, but rather, when they will be hacked, comments David Higgins, professional services manager for UK & Ireland at CyberArk, adding:
