Bomba Estéreo Teases New Album

Bomba Estéreo Teases New Album

Yesterday, Bomba Estéreo, the electo-cumbia group that for my money is the most exciting band working today, teased the release of their new album. No details given, but if the track accompanying the video is anything to rest your hat on, the groups continuing to forge new musical forms by a uniquely Caribbean mezcla of traditional genres. Below, youll hear a dancey riff with reggae overtones and a vibrating riff. Enjoy and whet your appetite!

So, lets cut to the chase . . .

My New Year’s Resolution:

Turn off the *&^% and Fly!
capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot

As most of you know, I recently wrote an article for nycaviation.com entitled, Do Commercial Pilots Really “Suck” at Manual Flying? (http://www.nycaviation.com/2013/11/commercial-pilots-really-suck-manual-flying/#.Uqkg5pFItFw)

In it, I detailed a new FAA study which posits that the “greatest risk” in today’s cockpit is 1.) Over-reliance on automation leading to complacency, and 2.) Lack of understanding of automation, leading to a reluctance to, well, “Turn off the magic and fly.”

capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot

While I take issue with the FAA’s premise that it’s “our greatest risk” (see an upcoming NYCA post where I, Karlene Petitt and others write about pilot fatigue), I did generally agree with the above two points.

Today’s airline pilots fly the safest airplanes in history. They are the best-trained pilots in the world, operating in an environment that has become six times safer than your own bathtub. But pilots are human, and therefore prone to human error.

ANATOMY OF AN AIRLINE FLIGHT

capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot

You board your plane,
take your seat,
strap in.

The door closes.

The plane pushes back.

In the cockpit, what’s happening?

________________________
You board your plane, strap in. The door closes.
In the cockpit, what’s happening?
________________________
   In a nutshell:
—After the tug disconnects and the engines are started, the Captain taxies the plane out to the active runway. He steers with his hand tiller and stops with the toe brakes on his rudder pedals.
—Cleared for Takeoff: The PF (“Pilot Flying”—either Captain or First Officer) takes the controls, runs the thrust up, steers with the rudders. The PNF (“Pilot Not Flying”) calls, “V1…Vr…” The PF rotates (pulls the stick back), the plane lifts off and flies.
—PNF: “Positive Rate” PF: “Gear Up” The PNF raises the gear handle and the landing gear sucks up into the gear wells.

capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot, A320, Airbus

At this point, 95% of the time for 95% of the pilots, the PF engages the “Autopilot.” (On the new RNAV departures, this is actually required for precision maneuvering.)

capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot, A320, Airbus
The infamous "Otto Pilot!"

From here on out, except for special cases, the airplane is flown entirely on autopilot. While most modern aircraft can “autoland” (land on autopilot), most of the time the PF disconnects the autopilot—usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000’ AGL—and lands manually.

Make no mistake, at all times while the autopilot is engaged, the PF is “flying.” That is, s/he is telling the autopilot what to do.
________________________
For airliners, flying is nothing.
Managing the flight is everything.
________________________

capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot, A320, Airbus

Think of today’s autopilot as a fancy, 3-D Cruise Control. You use your CC in the car to relieve you from the mundane burden of constantly adjusting the accelerator.
capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot, A320, Airbus

The autopilot works the same way. It frees the PF from the minutiae of flying.

This frees his mind up to take in the “Big Picture”—watch for other traffic, monitor the radio frequency, monitor performance and deal with other issues.
capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot, A320, Airbus

This type of flying—monitoring an autopilot—may not seem as romantic as Luke Skywalker “keeping it on manual for a while,” but believe you me, this is the safest way to travel.

As I’ve said in the past, When it comes to airliners, flying is nothing. Managing the flight is everything.
capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot, A320, Airbus
"I just want you to know:
were all counting on your Otto-Pilot."

Here’s the problem—and this is one of the main points the FAA is driving at:

all this “managing” and no “flying” makes Jack a dull pilot.

In Fifi (our affectionate name for the Airbus), this is doubly true.

Those who have taken basic flight training know that there are several controls you constantly have to manage:
capn aux, captain, aux, blog, cockpit, gopro, landing, airline, airliner, pilot, A320, Airbus

—the stick, or yoke, controlling up/down, right/left.

—the rudder pedals, coordinating turns with the stick to keep the plane flying efficiently (also used for directional control on the ground, and for landing in crosswinds.)

Bigreki srimati Wife New nepali short movie 2016 social awareness short movie

Bigreki srimati Wife New nepali short movie 2016 social awareness short movie

It has as of now been called attention to that marriage is more than adoration. In reality, it must be encouraged by affection, however basically it is a fellowship of life. What intimate romance looks for is acknowledged in marriage. Love gets to be "not kidding" in light of the fact that it concerns the entire of human life. Marriage comprises of an existence of work and stress, bliss and distress, affliction and wellbeing; it includes being youthful and getting to be old, managing little and enormous issues, adapting to inward and outer inconveniences, and confronting individual and social inquiries, all in adoring correspondence with each other.

A considerable number of days, weeks, months, and years are shared. Amid this long stretch - ought to the Lord gift it - the couple lives respectively in closeness, which uncovers all. It soon gets to be evident that huge things can matter almost no while little things can turn out to be horrendously enormous. Frequently over an inconsequential matter an extraordinary fight springs up. Marriage can indicate how any individual can be appallingly little.

Love needs to acknowledge the other individual with all his or her quirks, shortcomings, and unimportance. Love readies a home for the other. Marriage and the family give a resting place, a characteristic asylum from the chaotic pace of modem life. No strained or simulated conduct are vital at home; one can act naturally there.
There is another side to the coin. The flexibility and closeness of the home will dependably uncover what sort of people live there. In it one can not disguise oneself. Accordingly, family connections must be maneuvered carefully. A marriage must have the inward quality to hold up under everything.

Either the marriage will turn out to be increasingly unpleasant in light of the fact that a few does not have the adoration to help and maintain each different as they battle to make a place of refuge of their marriage, or the marriage will be supported through the affection to end up a wellspring of satisfaction and peace.

It has as of now been said that any perfect is strict and brutal, and prompts strained conduct. Genuine romance realizes that the other individual is not without human frailties. It doesnt contrast the other and a perfect or one bafflement after the other come. Cherish alone bears all things. Shortcomings and flaws will be found in adoration. Ones accomplice is acknowledged as given by God forever.

It has been brought up that being hitched is pretty much as troublesome as not being hitched. Marriage does not take care of all issues. Since the fall there is not a solitary state in life which is by nature "simple." Man has been unequipped for genuine fellowship as far back as he let run of the fellowship with the Lord God. That is particularly valid for the allembracing fellowship of marriage. Be that as it may, since Christ has come, marriage can be solemnized "in the Lord;" He has reestablished fellowship with God and subsequently with each other.

No man or lady is a disconnected person. Married couples have a particularly solid impact upon each other. Marriage implies that they develop toward each other to an ever increasing extent. It means being dependable to the new measurement of life as a couple.

In addition to other things, novelty is two individuals living in the same space. The couples house is a focal point of wellbeing on which they can fall back. The spouse makes the home tenable and lovely, a safe house for the husband to come to following an entire days work. The spouse gets what transpired "outside." His triumphs, disappointments, delights and tensions all accompany him. The spouse listens and examines things with him. Something isnt right if the spouse has no enthusiasm for her better halfs work. Similarly the spouse must listen to his significant other when she talks about the family unit, the kids, issues of childhood, and family unit accounts, to put it plainly, of everything associated with the family.

This happens inside the limits of the home. Great lodging conditions are prominently imperative for the soundness of the family. In a spot where the family cant act naturally as a result of absence of soundproofing, where they cant find a sense of contentment because of aggravations from neighbors, numerous things can turn out badly. Loft depression is a famous case of this.

Numerous marriage challenges emerge on the grounds that houses are too little, since expansive families cant bear the cost of assistance, and on the grounds that moms are so over-tired that their exclusive trust is to rest in. Such circumstances power spouses to wind up "menial workers" who disregard themselves, dress terribly and can no more stay aware of their husbands socially. This can bring about touchiness in the spouse, and therefore, a couple float separated. A man needs to have the capacity to be seen with his better half, for she is his magnificence. At the point when after strenuous and thorough work, a spouse gets back home to a wife who whines about her own particular work and is touchy in light of the fact that she cant oversee, who overpowers him with her grumblings, griev. ances and inconveniences, the seed of alienation is planted.

In such a circumstance the spouse may effortlessly take a gander at other ladies who give an additionally satisfying impression. He may ponder whether he settled on the right decision. When he starts to make correlations, the spouse will feel tricked and sharp. At the point when unwaveringness to the "spouse of his childhood" is distressfully attempted, then it must get to be evident that a husbands adoration is established on dependability. At that point he should keep on accepting his better half in every one of her inconveniences.

Together they started. Together they approached the Lord for a gift on their marriage and for the gift of kids. At the point when the challenges of raising a family debilitate to wind up a lot for the spouse, the husband must show himself to be her head and step up with regards to searching for ways and intends to change the circumstance.

This is no little errand today. Local help is elusive. Young ladies can gain more cash somewhere else. In any case, they should be reminded that one day they may wed and have a family. They too may confront the same issues that numerous painfully attempted moms face. Maybe single ladies and young ladies may ask themselves regardless of whether they could serve here. The spouse may likewise search for specialized strategies for helping the errand of the housewife, yet even with this, a wide range of challenges are not unraveled. It is the otherworldly mentality of the couple which is conclusive.

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents are either the product of the author’s imagination or used fictitiously. No reference to any real person, living or dead, should be inferred.

I never noticed it before.  Not in the months Id lived and worked in that area.  Not in the hundreds of cab rides Id taken past that very spot, and strangely, no one ever thought to mention it.  On that day I decided to walk to the office, choosing fresh air over the stifled, hours-old sickness of the backseat of a cab or the cattle compartments of the local buses.  The sun was damnably high and bright already, and that is why I chose to walk Lantern Lane.

The trees that grow along Lantern Lane have gone wild.  Even from either side of the road, they reach high enough and wide enough to cast their branches across the width of the street and intertwine, forming a thick knotted covering overhead that allows neither sun nor sky.

Thus, the lanterns.

Every house along the road has hung tall, bright lanterns to guide passersby, and even in the brightest October morning, it would be dark without them.  The cobblestones were slippery beneath my shoes, their fine, flat leather soles meant for polished tile floors and not the roughhewn edges of hand laid rocks.  I crossed a two-lane highway to continue up Lantern Lane, navigating the suddenly steep slope where no lanterns lit the path.  The side to my right was an undeveloped and dark wood of trees and swaying grass.  To my left, a tall earthen wall of brown dirt knotted with roots and clusters of fallen leaves.

As I crested the hill and the road straightened, I saw that there was a flat stretch of land filled with small, strange fixtures that dotted the ground like tombstones.  But they were not tombstones.  They were stacked formations of rock and brick, overgrown with roots and moss, set in a way that created a winding labyrinth that led all the way back to the entrance of a crumpled home. The windows were dark and the front door wide open.  The shutters on the windows hung lopsided from rusted nails and the porch was littered with discarded things.  A childs tricycle, so old the paint had faded to iron.  A rake.  A series of empty glass bottles.

Even more strange, the home seemed to be built into the craggy rock of the hillside, so that only the front of it was visible.  It was as if the earth had swallowed the house and gotten stuck.  Or perhaps it had birthed the house and I was witnessing the first slow moments of its delivery as it emerged through the hills crumbling dirt and stone orifice.  I stood looking at the front of the home in amazement when I suddenly felt something brush against my arm and I leapt in fright, only to see a small, smiling woman standing beside me.  "Hello, Bernard," she said.

Betty worked at the office with me, a homely girl with a boyish haircut who kept to herself and rarely spoke above a whisper.  She was dressed in an ugly blue pea-coat with broken buttons and flesh-colored pantyhose clung to her thick legs and swollen ankles.  She walked in a low shuffle, scraping her flat black shoes along the office carpet in a way that left her perpetually vulnerable to static electric shocks from anything she touched.

"Hello," I said, still trying to collect myself.  "Good morning.  I didnt know you came this way to work."

"Every day," she said.

I nodded at the house and said, "Did you ever see anything like that?"

Betty shrugged and said, "It has been as long as I can remember.  When I was a child we used to call it the Loch Ness Monster."

I frowned at that, "But why?  Its not in the water and its not a monster.  Its a house."

"Its just something we called it, I guess," she said.  She ran her hand flat through the air, making ripples over the odd rock formations and said, "Maybe because of the way the stones stick out of the ground, like the humps of Nessies back?  The local kids used to play a game to see who would be brave enough to run all the way into the courtyard and touch the front door.  No one ever made it halfway."

I looked again, searching for her meaning.  Perhaps in the shadows, from a certain perspective filled with childish innovation, it was possible.  "Lets go up to the house," I said.  "I want to see it."

"No," she said with a laugh. "Thats mad, and anyway, well be late for work."

"No we wont.  Come on, come with me.  I bet a property like this is worth a fortune.  Maybe the owner would sell it for a good price."

"Its haunted," she said.

Her tone was firm and flat and devoid of mischief.  I looked sideways at her and said, "You dont really believe that."

"Its what Ive always heard.  I was never dumb enough to go in there and see for myself.  I always stayed behind."

"Well Im going," I said.  "I dont believe in ghosts."

"Not at all?" she said.

"Not at all.  I dont believe in demons, fairies, leprechauns, or angels.  Nothing of the sort."

Betty took a hesitant step into the dark courtyard behind me and said, "Lets go, but we must be fast.  I cannot be late today.  I always wanted to, really.  I just never had the courage."

Her voice had a nervous, excited quality to it and I turned toward her and said, "Watch out for the ghouls!"

"You really dont believe in them?"

"I believe in nothing that cannot be proven by science," I said.  "I am an atheist.  A humanist.  A man of reason.  I will believe in the supernatural only when it appears directly before me and makes itself known."  The wind picked up as we wound through the courtyard, rattling the bare limbs of the trees all around us, stirring up the scattered leaves cluttered around the humps of the stone monster swimming through the ground on either side of us.  In the wind, a thousand different sounds.  The rattle of old aluminum and scrape of wood on stone, dirt shifting on the porchs landing, and high-pitched whistling as it cut between the narrow gaps in the hillside.  I paused for a moment and listened, then said, "Well, that explains it."

Betty was too busy trying to stay on the stone path and she said, "Explains what?"

"The wind here sounds like people talking.  If you were a fool you might imagine a childs voice surrounded by a hundred other whispers."  I smiled and said, "Its all the work of overactive imaginations and superstition."

Cath Ran Too Ach Spet Whallllllll…The wind moaned.  I stood in place and cocked my ear toward the sky, listening harder.  There had been, in fact, something more than just the sound of leaves blowing.

I looked back for Betty, but the woman standing at my side was not her.  It was an older foreign woman dressed in plain housekeepers clothing.  She looked at me with a silent smile, the kind of bemused, diminutive look all servants practice in the presence of their superiors.  My eyes widened and I said, "Hello!  I didnt see you there.  Are you working on this property?"

She did not respond, other than to extend her hand.  I took it and shook, feeling her warm, strong grip and said, "My name is Bernard.  I was passing by and wanted to get a better look at the house.  Do you know if its for sale?"

Cath Ran Too Ach Spet Whallllllll…the wind whispered again, speaking for the servant woman, who did nothing more than stare at me.  Her head was cocked at a slight angle to me, studying me, trying to make sense of what I was saying.  She still had not released my hand.

"Do you work here?" I said.

Still she did not respond.  I took a step back from her, attempting to free my hand, but she held me tight and began to pull.  Pulling me closer to the porch, pulling me closer to the entrance to the house.  My God,I thought suddenly.  Shes trying to take me with her.

Terror and anger fueled my strength enough that I gave a ferocious pull that nearly yanked the woman into me.  "I’m not going!" I said.  "But you can come with me.  Do you want to leave this place?"

We struggled like that, going back and forth as I dug in my heels on the jagged stone path and wrenched backwards, forcing the woman each step of the way.  She never spoke.  She never drew breath.  She never did more that stare at me in tilted silence, smiling with flat, unmoving lips.

Finally, I gave a terrific pull and yanked my hand hard enough away to free myself and went sprawling down onto the courtyard, striking one of the piles of bricks.  The servant woman looked down at me for a moment, then turned from me and headed back down the path and vanished into the house.

I shot up from the courtyard and ran as fast as I could, sliding and slipping on the dewy cobblestones of Lantern Lane.  I arrived at the office twenty minutes later, breathless, pant legs soaked and streaked with mud.  I took off my shoes by the front door to let them dry out and walked in wet socks toward my desk.  My boss scowled at my disheveled shirt and hair and said, "What on earth happened to you?"

"I was attacked by a dog," I said.

"Did you get bit?"

"Nearly.  Do you want me to go home and get changed?"

"No, thats all right," he said, patting me on the shoulder.  He looked up at the clock and said, "Has anyone seen Betty?"

I spun around in my seat, looking for her.  "You mean she didnt come in yet?"

"Not even a phone call," he said.  "And I needed her in early today."

I turned back to my desk and immediately began paying careful attention to the things on my desk, moving them around shiftlessly as my mind clicked and whirred to try and make sense of it all.  I was convinced Betty had run off when the wind began whispering.  If not, that shed turned tail at the sight of the servant woman.  It hadnt even occurred to me that she wouldnt be sitting at her desk when I arrived.

"Let me know when she shows up," he said.

I told him I would without raising my head, only to hear his office door close and the front office door open at the same time.  I felt a cool breeze blow across the back of my neck, chilling my damp hair, and heard something whisper, Cath Ran Too Ach Spet Whallllllll…

Flat, cheaply-made shoes shuffled across the office floor toward my desk.  I turned in my seat to say Thank God, only to feel the words die before they reached my mouth.  Bettys hand was extended toward me and she was walking with her head tilted sideways, her lips stretched across her face in a silent, flat grin.

Schaffer here…

I rarely have nightmares, and when I do, theyre normally about getting in trouble for some horrific thing that Im greatly relieved not to have done upon waking.  As for a straight up scary dream, they dont happen. At least, not often.

Last night I had a good old fashioned ghost dream.  I can only attribute it to residual thoughts floating around my head from subjecting myself to nothing but Evil Dead movies lately.  Some of the symbolism was there.  The haunted structure in the woods.  The hand being controlled by something supernatural.  As for everything else, I couldnt say.  The Loch Ness monster comment was a direct quote from the woman in my dream and I could make no more sense of it during the dream than I can now.  Maybe it was left over material from the Carnival of Cryptids?  It was sitting in some dusty drawer of my subconscious, just waiting for the right time and place for my brain to say, "Ah ha!  You can go there!"

I dont truck with the theory of dream symbolism or pay attention to them.  I mock people who fear the supernatural.  Much like the Bernard in the story, I refuse to believe in things that cannot be proven.  It strikes me as somewhat ironic that at night, when I am not paying attention, my mind reminds me that perhaps I am not quite as smart or assured as I think.

Binali Yıldırım Will Become Turkeys New Prime Minister

Binali Yıldırım Will Become Turkeys New Prime Minister

After the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto?lu, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (JDP) organized its extraordinary congress on May 22, 2016. The congress was organized -similar to previous ones- with only one leadership candidate; Binali Y?ld?r?m. Y?ld?r?m was chosen as the party’s new chair by taking nearly all votes and was assigned by President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an to form the new government. Without any doubt, Mr. Y?ld?r?m will become Turkey’s new Prime Minister soon. But this will not solve Turkey’s democratic problems as well as disputes about its political system.

Binali Y?ld?r?m (61) is often defined as one of the most successful members of the AKP cabinets since he has been the Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication for 11 years (longest serving person in this position in Turkey) and often credited as one of the architects of AKP’s giant infrastructural projects together with Mr. Erdo?an. Y?ld?r?m is known as a man of action who speaks rarely. He does not engage in political disputes with other members of the parliament. When he speaks; he either announces a new project or tells a joke. He speaks slowly and with words of ordinary people. He also speaks French and English as foreign languages. He is from Erzincan and he represents pious Anatolian people who want to see Turkey moving up in the world and enjoying better economic conditions. He loves technology and uses social media tools like Facebook and Twitter frequently. His rhetoric is not divisive and he might have more support from young and secular Turks who do not approve Erdo?an’s authoritarian and arrogant Islamist style. Thus, he might be a good choice for this position. But he will have an important disadvantage; he is presented by Turkish and international media as well as opposition parties as an associate of Erdo?an who does not have his own will. This might be seen as a weakness by Turkish voters who prefer strong and populist leaders. Students of Turkish Politics will remember the fall of ANAP (Motherland Party), a center-right political party that governed Turkey between 1983 and 1991 and scattered into pieces after the election of its charismatic leader Turgut Özal as the President of the Republic and the replacement of Özal with a so-called low profile figure Mr. Y?ld?r?m Akbulut. This will be the biggest disadvantage of Binali Y?ld?r?m.

Knowing this weakness, Binali Y?ld?r?m admitted during the Congress that he will try to change Turkish constitution and to bring a new Presidential system which will be fulfilled by Mr. Erdo?an. Presidential system discussion in Turkey is no longer a taboo, which might be seen in fact as a positive step. But there is a fundamental problem in Erdo?an’s Turkish-type Presidentialism; Erdo?an wants to establish a Presidential system as in the Central Asian Turkic Republics. Turkey, as a country that practices parliamentary system since 1876 and democracy since 1950, should take more democratic Presidential systems like USA or a democratic semi-Presidential system like France as its new model. Turkic states are largely authoritarian; this might be reasonable in their own specific conditions since these countries are recently established after the fall of communism and are still under the strong influence of Russia’s authoritarian political culture. But Turkey, a country officially aiming to become a European Union member and have very close economic, cultural, political and military ties with the Western states, should take inspiration from Western capitals. Looking objectively, in fact Turkey could act itself as a model to Central Asian states even with its current socioeconomic status and political system much more developed than these countries. However, Erdo?an wants to dominate the political scene by himself alone and does not explain clearly why he wants his powers to be unchecked. His rhetoric of not being able to rule Turkey with current system might be in fact correct; but then Turkish people expect from him to explain what is wrong with the parliamentary system or a democratic Presidentialism as in the case of USA.

This will be the key political issue in Turkey together with rising terrorist activities of PKK, growing concerns about political Islam and ISIS threat and deteriorating relations with Russia in the following months. Transition into Presidentialism now seems more possible, especially after the lifting of the immunity of Turkish parliamentarians by three “Turkish” parties: AKP (JDP), CHP (RPP) and MHP (NAP). This might be followed by a by-election in which AKP might dominate against pro-Kurdish HDP (PDP) in south-eastern villages whose demographics have changed considerably in recent months due to military operations and forced migrations imposed on Kurdish people both by the state and PKK. However, Kurdish people might also consider the removal of its elected representatives from the Turkish parliament as an attack to their democratic rights and vote largely in favor of pro-Kurdish PDP again.
