Birthday Mothers Day and Citrus All In One

Birthday Mothers Day and Citrus All In One

So this is my attempt at digital painting. I decided a while back that I would do a series of paintings for my mom for her birthday/Mothers day (which are only two weeks apart). The theme of the series is her with our dog (Maui) going about their daily activities at our lake house. That seems to be where they both are happiest and that is how I like to think of them. I initially started painting them on watercolor paper, but I got so frustrated with the results that I decided I needed to try something new. And here is the first completed piece created completely in photoshop.... enjoy! I will post the rest of them as I finish them.

For those of you who know my mother (ahem, Lainey) please dont say anything to her about what Im up to. I am getting this one printed and will be taking it home to her next week, so until then keep this hush hush. I am fairly certain that my mom doesnt get online for anything uless it is completely necessary, so Im hopefully safe there. If not, Happy Birthday/Mothers Day, Mom!

And finally, since I havent posted to Illustration Friday in FOREVER, I thought that I would make this fit into this weeks topic: citrus. The palette is "citrusy" right? And also, this is a painting of morning at the lake, and I gaurantee that later on this particular afternoon my mom will make margaritas, which are made with lime juice, which is a citrus fruit. So there.

Happy Wednesday!

Body After Baby How A Fit Mom of 4 Does It All!

Body After Baby How A Fit Mom of 4 Does It All!

I always try and surround myself with other women who are for women empowerment, lifting one another up, and spreading positivity like I am. My wonderful friend Crystal is all about that, and is such an inspiration to me. She is also so passionate about health and fitness, and I find constant motivation from her. Thus, I wanted to interview her for my blog. Crystal can offer you guys tips and advice that I cant! I have not had a child yet, so I do not feel at liberty to tell someone how easy it could be, how to make it work, etc. Crystal truly does it all and I cannot express at how much I admire her for that. She is a mother of 4 with one of her daughters not even being a year old yet, devoted wife, employed full-time and working her way up fast at her company in Human Resources. Even with all of that going on, she still continues to make her health and fitness a top priority. She consistently stays dedicated to scheduled workouts along with all of her other demands, and even has a lot of "two-a-days" where she will engage in cardio first thing in the morning and lift weights in the evening. Crystal truly works so hard at her job, her awesome husband Jordan adores her, and she has beautiful and successful children. Crystal is never one to wait around for good things to happen - she is always chasing them.

Perhaps the most inspirational part of her story is that it has not always been easy. Crystal had her first child at 18 and knows what it is like to struggle as a single mother. However, she never made excuses and worked to the best of her ability to get where she is today.

Where did your love for health and fitness begin?
Health has always been a part of me growing up.  I was into track, basketball, volleyball, cross country and even a cheerleader. I was very active and a healthy child.  Then I married to my first husband shortly after high school. Because that relationship was toxic, after my second pregnancy, I had reached up to 190 pounds.  I had high blood pressure and no energy. I let myself go, because of that marriage. I lost ALL self-esteem and self-worth. I used food as my comfort and I lost myself.  It was not until after I had my son (2nd child) that I truly looked into the mirror and said to myself: you are the only person who will love you NOW, so you must do something about it.  That is when I did. I cleaned up my diet, I started in-house workouts and I lost 75 pounds in a year. I was healthy and happy once again!

Surprisingly my introduction to fitness was through running, and at a time in my life where part of me used it as an escape from my current situation, and another part of me used it as therapy and personal growth. I was at a low, going through a separation/divorce, I did not feel good about myself, or where I was in life, and I remembered how much I enjoyed running in school. One day I left the house and started running, I could barely run a mile, but was determined to do more. 1 became 2, then 3, then 5, 10, 20, and eventually I ran my first marathon and ultra-marathon. My relationship with running changed over the years and as I grew as a person. I still love running to this day, and now for all the right reasons, I but wanted to challenge myself even more. I previously dabbled with weights in the past, but it was not until I met my husband that my interest in the gym sparked. I started working out with him, and loved the challenge it offered and his consistency with it over the years. That soon became my consistency as well. While running is therapeutic to me, the gym is anything but that. I fell in love probably just a year ago by finally getting the formula right for me by combining weight training with conditioning. I love changes my body have made with the two together.

What is your biggest accomplishment fitness wise?
Overcoming insecurities has been one of my biggest accomplishments overall. That helped build my confidence, my ability to stand up for myself and what I believe in. With all of that happening, I was able to love myself again to actually realize what I deserved as a person and in a relationship.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have encountered while keeping fit?
Patience! I had to learn that results do not happen overnight. No matter how perfect your diet is, how perfect your form and routine is, it will always take time, and more than you want to give. It’s a game of mental endurance.  With having four children, I have to be extremely patient and work hard at getting the results I want. I know that anything is possible and I also know that my body has been through so much.

You are a devoted wife, mother of 4, work full time, and stay fit. How do you do it all and keep consistent?
Consistency has come to me naturally because I was a single mother for so long. Consistency was necessary. I learned that having routines was the best way to actually include this in my life with being a single parent to my children. Now that I have remarried, I have included this in our lifestyle. With the busy life our family now has, how I’m able to do it all is by keeping balance. And that’s all my husband. He keeps me in check. He reminds me what my priorities are.  If my daughter has a track meet one evening, I don’t feel bad for missing a workout or eating out afterwards.  I can easily make the decision to wake up at 5AM before any of the kids wake up to get that workout in.  Family is and always will be first and I love that balance we have in our marriage and family.
As we know, life can be so busy and hectic, especially when you add your health and fitness as a priority; what do you and your husband do to stay devoted to one another?
We work out together, we talk throughout the day with each other, we have date nights once during the week and once on the weekend, and most importantly we don’t keep our hands off each other. We’re best friends, and passionately in love with each other. If anything, health and fitness has helped add to our relationship and marriage. It adds to our sex life and adds to our family life. The consistency and balance required for fitness are also required in family so it crosses over and helps in all areas.

How often do you allow yourself to eat and/or drink whatever you want? What are your favorite choices to indulge in?
I never eat whatever I want. I will have cheat meals once, maybe twice a week. My favorite choices to indulge in are pancakes, wine, and margaritas.

What would you tell someone who thinks they can never lose weight since they have children, husband, a job, etc.?
Fitness is a choice that you have to be completely committed too, just like marriage. It’s a lifestyle, and it is possible! I am living proof. It’s not always easy, but what is that you really want? I do believe it’s easier than some people think it is. Everything you do requires effort, making good food or bad food, watching TV or going to the gym - this choice just requires a little more. Until you have made the realization that you will be doing this for the rest of your life, you may get temporary results with diets etc., but it will always come back until you’re committed. Being in a fitness competition is a different story, it’s very demanding. But a fit lifestyle is very balanced and very healthy.

Does your household partake in the same healthy eating habits that you do? If not, how do you manage to cook different meals and keep from eating their food?
They absolutely do.  I cook and prep every Sunday for our clean foods for the week.  My husband and I take our food to work with us and when the children get home, they eat what I have prepped for the week. They actually love it. They will still want and have their occasional pizza nights and junk food, but they’ll take grilled chicken, fish, steak, vegetables and rice now any day over fast food. We are examples to our children. What kind of examples we are is up to us. They want to do what we do. Not only do they want to eat what we do but they look forward to joining us in the gym when they’re old enough too.

What is best advice you have ever learned about keeping fit?
Living a healthy lifestyle has overall changed my outlook in life, love, marriage, motherhood, in my career and overall my focus in life.  Every day I wake up,  I am thankful for the way I can view things in life and knowing I am adding years to my life in hopes to remain here on earth for a very long time to see my children grow, my grandchildren be born, and maybe their children!

Black White Sandy All Over

Black White Sandy All Over

I probably wear this jumpsuit at least once a week. At least. Its just so versatile and flattering, how could I not? Last night I was feeling a little sad so we picked up and took a trip down the shore for some frolicking in the sand and Bashful Banana whips. (One of my most favorite things in the entire world.)

Something about the beach is just so healing. Im glad that its so close by because Ive been all out of sorts lately and the ocean is the perfect place to escape to. Yes, its cliché, but feeling small and insignificant next to something so huge puts everything in perspective. (All of the nostalgia from practically growing up here helps a lot as well!)

As for my outfit, Ive been trying to dress more intentional lately without putting too much stock into what I look like. I get really wrapped up in appearances and its not healthy. Obviously having a style blog doesnt help much. Ive been wearing what makes me feel good and what empowers me. Sometimes that means being daring but lately its meant being a bit more modest. I layered the jumpsuit with a cute off-shoulder top (previously seen here) for some dimension and some extra coverage. Will layering ever go out of style? I really hope not.

Hope youve all been well and have a great weekend!

BHIM App All you need to know about functionality and app security

BHIM App All you need to know about functionality and app security

We talk to the security experts behind BHIM, the new digital payments app by the National Payments Corporation of India. Heres what we learnt about the apps security and functionality.

BHIM, the new digital payments app launched by the National Payments Corporation of India, is riddled with bugs. The app is supposed to simplify digital transactions by bringing UPI based transactions to Android users (and iOS by Jan 10). All you need to do is have your mobile number linked to your bank account, and the app will automatically retrieve other details such as your account number and branch information from your bank. This binding of a mobile number to a particular bank account is a function of UPI. So all you need is a bank registered mobile number and you are good to transfer money to anyone, anywhere instantaneously. But is it really that simple? Is it even safe to use the BHIM app? Let’s find out
BHIM: The easy-to-use app that refuses to work
When BHIM launched all of 4 days ago, it was thought to be a revolutionary new step by the government of India. But, it seems like everyone was quick to pass a judgement on the app. The idea of a single app for all banking related transactions may be a very bright and noble one, but its implementation is a whole other story. While many users who downloaded the app on launch day were able to transact with ease, the same is not the case 4 days, 3 million downloads and 5 lakh transactions later.

Some user reviews of the app on Play Store
Multiple users have reported that none of their transactions are going through after linking their accounts with the BHIM App. Besides failed transactions, users have also been facing issues trying to generate OTPs and mPINs during the registration process within the app. Now, while OTP generation could be an issue at the bank’s end, failed/invalid transactions could be a result of overloaded servers. Saket Modi, CEO of Lucideus, one of the teams behind the security of the BHIM app says, “The scalability of the server is a one time problem, once this is solved it (the app) will absolutely be at par. When you make credit or debit card transactions, there are no issues because they expect an X amount of traffic and that is there. Plus minus 10-20% is ok. BHIM is a new thing and three million downloads in three days, I don’t think has happened anywhere in the world till date.” Comparing private companies and government organisations, Modi also pointed out that the pace at which decisions are made in the latter is usually slower, because govt organisations follows a set procedure, hence when a decision is reached to increase the capacity of the servers supporting BHIM, the problem of transaction errors should be fixed “very soon.”
That said, Modi also pointed out that “It’s not that simple to push an update to the app because of so many dynamic variables which are involved.” So if you were hoping the app would stop generating transaction/registeration errors overnight, you might have to wait a while before things settle into a smooth functioning pattern.
Those who were utterly unsuccessful at linking their bank accounts with BHIM, may have to uninstall the application and download it again. It took us multiple attempts before we could get our account linked to the app. In some cases, certain bank accounts are still not being able to function in tandem with the app. For example, a Standard Chartered account refuses to set up a 6-digit UPI pin using the BHIM app, even after multiple tries.
How secure is the BHIM app?
As of now, it seems like BHIM is running a pretty tight ship as far as security is concerned; an impression we have after speaking to the security team behind the app. Although Lucideus’ Modi says “nothing can be 100% safe,” he believes that BHIM’s three-factor authentication is strong enough to keep out amateur hackers or as he calls them “script kiddies.”

“Your phone number and your device ID is bound with this app. It really takes the ownership of that device. By this I mean, it’s an authentication mechanism in itself. Why? Because number one, that device will be operational at that time. The data that it (BHIM) is storing on the device is also encrypted and all the new operating systems including iOS and Android uses containerisation, which means my apps data only I can access, nobody else can access. That’s a standard feature true for any application running on Android, which is true for this app also,” says Modi.
What this essentially means is that the data generated by BHIM is stored in an authenticated and encrypted area of a user’s mobile device. The practice is also sometimes reffered to as application sandboxing, although in its true sense, sandboxing is supposed to isolate applications completely, which is not the case with BHIM. In fact, Modi tells us that the 4-digit PIN used access the app, is stored on a users device itself. This could be accessed by a hacker if your phone is ever stolen, as Modi points out that “there is nothing known as 100% encryption.” But, the app also needs a 4 or 6 digit UPI PIN to transact or check other account details, which is in turn stored on the UPI servers and will act as another step of authentication before a hacker can make use of the BHIM app to transact.
So essentially, the three-factor authentication includes, the binding of the device ID and the app, the registered mobile number with the bank and the UPI PIN that you set for transactions. “Even if your phone gets stolen and someone replicates your SIM by giving fake documents to an a service provider, they will not be able to transact on the app,” assures Modi.
While the steps taken to secure the app seem pretty stringent, what remains to be seen is how security is kept up on the apps server, which could be the main target of malicious attackers. In the near future, the government is also looking to add fingerprint authentication for UPI transactions, which will still need a PIN or two, says Modi.

Bloons Tower Defense 5 Walkthrough for all the Beginner Levels

Bloons Tower Defense 5 Walkthrough for all the Beginner Levels

Here is a fail-safe walkthrough that will help you beat all the beginner levels on Bloons Tower Defense 5 on the HARD setting.  The strategy will need some tweaking to work for the intermediate, advanced, and expert levels.  This is but one possible strategy to win Bloons Tower Defense on Hard.  I do not use any abilities, farms, or super monkeys.   My solution here is based on the Android version.  For Windows and other platforms, my Bloons TD5 strategy will work very much the same, but there could be some slight differences as I have not tested outside of Android.  Get the Android Bloons TD5 from the Play Store here.

I have played a couple of co-op online games and then realized that a lot of players play this tower defense game without any strategy at all.  They just build and break at random.  Not knowing what works and how to defend to be ready for the next level.

I have tested this strategy successfully on all the beginner levels that were available at the time of posting (monkey lane, 3 times around, north pole, patch, maze, fireworks, brick wall, z factor, park path, the rink, roswell, and space truckin.)

Use the below build order and guide.  I will use the screen-prints on the monkey lane board.  To simplify this walkthrough, I have only built towers in between rounds.

Round 1:  Build a Dart Monkey.    Place the dart monkey close to the start.  The optimal location will be where this same dart monkey can target the track much later on again.   This is a good location for monkey lane: (Hint: click on the picture to zoom in)

Upgrade the dart monkey to Long Range Darts, Enhanced Eyesight, and Sharp Shots.
Go!

Round 2: Upgrade your dart monkey to Razor Sharp Shots.

Round 4 end: Upgrade your dart monkey to Triple Darts.

Round 12 end: Place a Sniper Monkey. For now, this monkey will take car of anything that tried to escape.    I placed it here, but you can place it anywhere as its range will be the full screen.

Upgrade the Sniper to Full Metal Jacket and Faster Firing.

Round 24 end: Build a Monkey Village.  You need to place it so that it covers your glue gunner, and there must be space around it to build cover a couple of Bomb Towers.
I placed it here:

Build a Glue Gunner.   The placing is very important.  You need to place it close to the start, have a big open area - we need space to place a monkey village with lots of towers next to it - and it must cover some track further down.  This is where I place it in Monkey Lane:

Upgrade the glue gunner:  Glue Soak, Corrosive Glue, Stickier Glue.   Change the glue gunner so that it target strong.

Round 25 end: Upgrade the Monkey Village to Monkey Beacon.  This will increase the attach range.
Round 27 end: Upgrade the Monkey Village to Monkey Fort.
Round 32 end: Upgrade the sniper to Night Vision Goggles.  He can now detect and shoot camo balloons. (Hint: This is needed for round 33 with a group of Camo bloons.  The single dart monkey sometimes are not strong enough to take them all out).

Round 33 end: Upgrade the Glue Gunner to Glue Splatter.

Round 36: Upgrade the Monkey Village to Radar Scanner.  This is important so that the towers under the village can take out camo balloons.

Round 38: Build a Bomb Tower under the cover of the Monkey Village.

Upgrade the Bomb Tower: Extra Range, Frag Bombs, Cluster Bombs, Bigger Bombs.  Target First.  In Round 39, upgrade the tower to Missile Launcher.

Round 41 end: Upgrade the Bomb Tower to Bloon Impact.

Round 42 end: Build a Bomb Tower, also under the shade of the Monkey Village.  Hint: If you are not sure if it is under cover, have a look at the range of the tower.  The range will drop when you move too far away from the village.  Upgrade this tower to Extra Range, Frag Bombs, Bigger Bombs, Missile Launcher.  Set to attack Strong.

Round 43 end: Upgrade this new Bomb Tower to MOAB Mauler.

Round 45 end: Build another Bomb Tower, same as the previous one.  Remember to set to attack Strong.
This configuration will be strong enough to take out the blue MOAB balloon that will attach you in round 46.

Round 46 end: Upgrade the Monkey Village to Jungle Drums.  This will increase the attack speed.

Round 48 end: Upgrade the Glue Gunner to Bloon Dissolver.

Round 49 end: Build a Bomb Tower at the Village.  This one I place so that it covers the furthest away track - but still under cover from the Village.  Upgrade Extra Range, Frag Bombs, Cluster Bombs, Bloon Impact, Bigger Bombs, Missile Launcher.  Target first.

Round 50 end: Build a Bomb Tower and upgrade to MOAB Mauler with Target Strong.    (Upgrade Extra Range, Frag Bombs, Bigger Bombs, Missile Launcher and MOAB Mauler).  Build at the Village.

Round 52 end:  Build another MOAB Mauler tower as the previous.
Round 54 end: Build another MOAB Mauler tower as the previous.
Round 55 end: Build another MOAB Mauler tower as the previous.

This is what we have now:

Now, keep on building MOAB Maulers as above as soon as you have enough money.
When you have 8 MOAB Maulers, then build another Bloon Impact with target first.  This tower will really help when the big field of ceramics and camos attack.

At the end of Round 70, I had 13 MOAB Mauler- and 3 Bloon Impact Bomb Towers, all under the Monkey Village.

No more space for towers under the Village.   So, now you can start another Monkey Village and only need to build MOAB Maulers.  You need a couple more to solve the last Hard Round (Round 85).  Upgrade the Monkey Village same as the other one - you will appreciate the Radar Scanner in Round 82!  So, upgrade Monkey Beacon, Monkey Fort, Radar Scanner, and Jungle Drums.

At the end of Round 80:  I am almost ready for the final level!

Round 84 is a tough one.  Some balloons almost made it!  The far-end Bloon Impact Bomb Tower did it for me.

Round 85... a bit easier than 84!  No match for my towers.  I won before this big green machine go half-way.

Hope you enjoyed this walkthrough for Bloons Tower Defense 5.

British Power is all Wind

British Power is all Wind

Britain has decided to go all-out for wind-power. On Thursday, I flew over the massive off-shore Thanet wind-farm - one of the largest in the UK - in the English Channel off Foreness Point. The farm consists of 100 turbines, each over 300ft high, and is expected to power over 200,000 homes. It will increase the amount of energy generated from offshore wind in the UK by one third to 1,314MW. Opened in September, the Thanet wind-farm was built by the Swedish Vattenfall energy company, and increases the number of large scale off-shore British turbines to 436, to be compared with 2,640 based on land.

Not everyone is convinced that wind-power is the most reliant route to clean, renewable carbon-free energy, and it is concerning that Britain is relying on a power source that must be backed up by more constant technologies such as nuclear, coal, or gas, because the wind blows inconsistently, as is its nature. A mere 2% of Britains electricity was produced from renewable sources in 2002, but it is hoped that this should rise to 10% by the end of the year in light of the new wind-power generating capacity. There are further cost issues in upgrading the national grid to cope with power-surges and the need to switch between different power sources.

It should be noted that electricity provides only around one third of the total energy used in the U.K, and the bulk of that is accounted for by heating and transportation, which is supplied by respectively coal/gas and oil based fuels. Hence the UK will have its work cut out if it is to meet a EU target to raise its overall energy provision from renewables from the present 5% to 15% by 2020.

The actualization of an overall wind-power strategy is not going smoothly, however, and the number of new wind-farms coming on-stream has fallen by 30%, in part as a consequence of the recession. There has also been a fall in the past 12 months by 50% in planning approvals for wind-farms in England, a situation that is also reflected in Scotland. There is also considerable opposition to wind-turbines which are perceived as unsightly and noisy, as is reflected by the 230-odd campaign groups that operate across the whole of the U.K.

Indeed, some of these groups advocate nuclear power as a better option than wind, a situation that would have been almost unthinkable ten years ago. It was estimated in 2008 that to meet the U.K. wind-power goal by 2020 would require building one new turbine every day for the next twelve years. Since progress so far has fallen far short of this rate of conversion, little confidence is lent that the nation will be able to keep its promise on renewables.
